SUMMARY:Management and Utilization of the RDAEF
DESCRIPTION:Description There is strong evidence that allied dental personnel increase productivity of dental offices and clinics. In 2010\, via AB 2637\, California Registered Dental Assistants in Extended Functions (RDAEF) received additional restorative functions\, allowable under the direct supervision of a dentist.These functions include:Conduct preliminary evaluation of the patient’s oral health\, including (but not limited to) charting\, intraoral and extra-oral evaluation of soft tissue\, classifying occlusion\, and myofunctional evaluation.Perform oral health assessments in school-based\, community health project settings under the direction of a dentist\, registered dental hygienist\, or registered dental hygienist in alternative practice.Size and fit endodontic master points and accessory points.Cement endodontic master points and accessory points.Take final impressions for tooth-borne removable prosthesis.Place\, contour\, finish\, and adjust all direct restorations.Polish and contour existing amalgam restorations.Adjust and cement permanent indirect restorations.Perform cord retraction of gingiva for impression procedures.Take final impressions for permanent indirect restorations.One viable alternative for increasing production and controlling office overhead while maintaining quality of care – is the utilization of the RDAEF2 in practice. There are currently only 2\,082 licensed RDAEFs in the entire state of California. There are 35\,078 licensed DDS in California. Each dentist can employ three (3) RDAEFs in practice. During the course\, you will hear from dentists who are utilizing RDAEFs in practice and they will share the impact the RDAEF has had on their practice.The purpose of this course is to provide an in-depth knowledge of the Loma Linda University RDAEF program and details of the extensive training that the students receive. You will have an opportunity to see the quality of work that these students have produced.At the end of the course\, dentists will be informed on how to evaluate the direct restorations placed by the RDAEFs in their practice.

DESCRIPTION:Description This 84-hour (52hrs. at LLU laboratory/32hrs. extern at extramural facility) course is designed to prepare RDA students to be eligible to take the written state board examination for Orthodontic Assisting Permit licensure.The student will be able to perform practical aspects and apply classroom theory in a laboratory environment\, as well as performing orthodontic chairside assisting for a private practice orthodontist or general dentist as an externship. DESCRIPTION:You would have to be living in a cave not to notice the increase in autoimmune diseases recently. There are currently over 100 autoimmune diseases and experts think those are only the tip of the iceberg. Some of these diseases directly impact the oral cavity in a significant\, sometimes devastating\, way.  In addition\, medications used to treat these conditions have important side effects and interactions the dental team needs to understand in order to provide safe and effective care for these patients. Dr. Huffines will begin with an easy-to-understand update on how our amazing immune system works. Then we will explore what causes the body’s immune system to attack itself – autoimmune disease. Some of the most important autoimmune diseases that impact the oral cavity or the delivery of dental care will be described. You may be shocked to find out what common diseases have an autoimmune component. Are the Autoimmune Diets a gimmick or are some scientifically valid? SUMMARY:Understanding the TMJ and its Relationship to Occlusion and Airway: A Radiographic Exploration
DESCRIPTION:The aim of this course is to teach clinicians how to look for radiographic diagnostic clues that may indicate the presence of TMD or Sleep-disordered breathing in their dental patients. Taught by Dr. Dania Tamimi\, an Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist and author of a textbook on the subject\, “Specialty Imaging: Temporomandibular joint”\, the course will include a comprehensive review of TMJ and upper respiratory tract anatomy as visualized on CBCT and MRI volumes. She will review the growth and development of the TMJ and how dysfunction can change the morphology of the oral and maxillofacial complex\, including the airway\, and how to diagnose some of these dysfunctions using CBCT. The relationship of the TMJs and airway to the occlusion will be discussed in light of bite changes that may affect the final restorative and orthodontic outcome if undiagnosed. DESCRIPTION:Most modern dentists have developed vast knowledge in esthetics\, occlusion\, and restorative dentistry. However\, when presented with a complex case many clinicians have difficulty deciding where to start\, what materials to use\, and the proper sequence for treatment. With modern ceramic materials and implants\, the chance for catastrophic failure due to interference with function is greatly increased. Dr. McDonald will discuss proper positioning of the teeth utilizing functional-esthetic guidelines and outline a system for diagnosis and treatment sequencing of complex restorative cases through segmental restoration with modern materials. Recognizing the signs of occlusal trauma on the teeth and restorations allows the dentist to minimize the effects and avoid restoration failures. Treatment can consist of an occlusal adjustment of the teeth\, or a bruxism splint to protect both the teeth and restorative care. \n\n\n\nObjectives:1.Identify signs of occlusal disease on teeth and restorations\, and determine appropriate treatment possibilities from a splint to an occlusal adjustment2.Determine a predictable simple method for mounting casts to fabricate a maxillary occlusal bruxism splint that is easy to fit and adjust.3.Learn the sequential technique for an occlusal adjustment to create a mutually- protected dental occlusion following basic guidelines.
