Tooth Truth: Advocacy Skills for Fluoride Champion

August 20 @ 5:30 pm 6:30 pm PDT

This course is designed to review the latest water fluoridation science and empower dental teams with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to become advocates for community water fluoridation (CWF). As local governments and water boards across the U.S. reconsider fluoride policies, dental professionals must be prepared to speak with authority and clarity about fluoride’s science, benefits, and cost-effectiveness. California State Dental Director, Dr. Shakalpi Pendurkar, will review statewide recommendations for optimal fluoride exposure to preserve population health. Pediatrician and fluoridation expert, Dr. Susan Fisher-Owens, will share fluoridation practices, policies, and evidence to support interprofessional education and advocacy. Participants will be equipped to address common misconceptions, communicate with the public and policymakers, and mobilize support when local fluoridation programs are at risk.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand California policies for water fluoridation
  • Learn clear communication points to emphasize the evidence-based benefits of community water fluoridation to both the public and policymakers.
  • Engage in effective advocacy strategies to support the continuation or implementation of community water fluoridation programs.
